Pokémon Rosso Fuoco begins with the story of a 10-year-old boy, named Rosso, with the dream of becoming a talented Pokemon trainer someday. Rosso decided to take a trip to the cities of the Kanto continent to learn and find his first Pokemon. On the way, he met Professor Oak and his nephew: Blue. Recognizing the talent and great desire in the eyes of this boy, the professor decided to donate 3 Pokemon: Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle so that it can protect him in the difficult journey ahead. Blue also receives one of them, he will be a companion and also is the first opponent that Rosso needs to overcome.

The plot of Pokémon Rosso Fuoco, although elaborated in detail, has open gameplay and focuses on the player’s exploration. Kanto is a large continent, including 8 cities and many other surrounding areas. In turn, players will explore each city, battle the trainers in the Gyms, and defeat the Leader Gyms to move to a new city/stage. After crossing all 8 cities, the system will open a new scenario, including Team Rocket, a criminal organization trying to control the world with the power of legendary Pokemon. However, that is not a real challenge when the player must defeat all of the 4 Kanto champions (called Elite Four) to truly become the best Pokemon trainer ever.

To be able to overcome these challenges, players need to have strong enough Pokemon. In the process of exploring the area or performing tasks, players can catch new types of Pokemon with Pokeball as well as collect Ruby and Sapphire gems to evolve their own summoned beasts. In addition, they are also designed with a level system and a skill system. When winning battles, Pokemon will gain experience points to level up, unlock some new battle skills or improve attributes and health points.

The battles follow a Turn-based mechanism, in which the two coaches take turns controlling their Pokemon to fight until the first one runs out of health. There are 4 available features, including “Attack” – to use skills, “Item” – to use support items, “Bag” – to take the Pokeball to catch the opponent’s Pokemon, and “Run” – to run away from the fight. In addition, the game also supports a connection feature, allowing players to use wires to connect with other devices of friends and perform a number of other operations such as fighting or trading.
