In an alternate version of Earth’s history, a treaty was signed in the early twenty-first century in which all countries willingly destroyed their nuclear arsenals, ending international conflicts. However, the presumed era of world peace is marred by ongoing attacks by a new terrorist group known as “Heaven Smile,” which comprises human mutants infected with a lethal virus and targets the United Nations and the International Ethics Committee (I.E.C.). Meanwhile, the relationship between the United States and Japan deteriorates as the latter is taken over by a party that wants to cut ties with the United States.

Killer7 is a group of assassins hired by Christopher Mills on behalf of the U.S. government. The group is led by Harman Smith, an elderly man who uses a wheelchair endowed with the “Multifoliate Personae Phenomenon,” which allows him to transform into seven different personalities who were professional assassins in their lives and whose souls were absorbed by Harman after they were killed in a mysterious incident fifty years ago. Garcian Smith is the most powerful of these seven personas and the only one who can communicate with Harman.

Killer 7 is a game that combines shooting, puzzle solving, and light role-playing elements. During most of the game, the player can switch between any of the seven characters. Each character has their own set of skills. Dan, for example, is an expert marksman, whereas Coyote is a skilled thief with exceptional mobility. The unusual cast also includes the blind Con, who moves quickly; Kaede, who has ranged abilities; Mask, who has the most lethal arsenal; the albino Kevin, who can turn invisible; and Garcian, the pack’s leader, who can resurrect the bodies of slain characters.

Despite the game’s 3D environments, character navigation is limited: playable characters can only move along predetermined (though frequently branching) paths. When you draw a weapon, the view changes to a first-person perspective with free camera rotation but no movement. Typically, the player should use various combinations of characters and weapons to eliminate the approaching enemy as quickly as possible before suffering damage. Defeated enemies (especially those killed with critical hits) give the player “blood,” which can be converted into serum in unique rooms and used to improve the characters’ abilities. Much of the game’s gameplay is dedicated to solving puzzles and gathering plot-related information by conversing with the game’s exotic characters.
