TimeSplitters 2, the follow-up to Free Radical Design’s PlayStation 2 launch title, sends players hurtling through time as they battle the malevolent TimeSplitters in ten distinct periods ranging from the Wild West to a futuristic space station and everything in between.

Cortez, the series hero, is sent on a quest to discover the origins of the TimeSplitters, an enigmatic group that travels through time, causing havoc for the good people of Earth. Using time travel paradoxes to his advantage, the hero can join forces with past and future versions of himself to fight the enemy as a team. A large selection of historical, modern, and futuristic weapons are available, as well as environments with destructible elements.

Depending on the difficulty level selected, players will be presented with simple objectives to complete or, in the more complex settings, new areas and significantly more involved objectives to complete. The Story mode can also be played cooperatively and simultaneously by two players.

TimeSplitters 2 includes a Challenge mode, similar to its predecessor, that presents the player with various time- and skill-based events. Completing these within the time constraints earns the player bronze, silver, or gold medals, which help unlock new game options, levels, and playable characters (of which there are more than 120).

League, Custom, and Network sub-modes are available in the Arcade mode. League events provide the player with pre-configured maps, game types, and objectives to compete in, while the other Arcade modes make up most of the title’s multiplayer component. Up to four players and a slew of AI “bots” can compete in 16 customizable disciplines in Custom mode, including Deathmatch, Regeneration, Virus, Thief, Shrink, Monkey Assistant, and Flame Tag, each with a unique style of gameplay. Thief, for example, assign players the task of collecting tokens left by fallen combatants. In this game, the number of kills is less critical than the number of tickets.
