Rad Racer is the first auto racing game created for NES by Square publisher. This is a simple but challenging racing game. Players will control their cars to overcome obstacles on the road to complete the race. Before entering the track, there are two vehicles they can choose to control, the 328 Twin Turbo or F1 engine. The cars have different designs but all have the largest travel speed of 255 km/h.

When entering the track, players will observe the route to move through a small map placed below the game. Movement speed is also displayed near the map so they can control it when coming to prepare for the turn of the track. Players will control the car to the left, right, accelerate or slow down with the joystick. During vehicle control, they may encounter some obstacles such as signs or trees. The car will be damaged and take the player’s time to finish the track when they collide with it. The same vehicles on the road also bring obstacles for the driver. Try to drive the car to the destination within the time allowed. When the time is up, if the player has not completed the task, they still control their car but are considered to have not completed the race. Players have to restart the track several times to gain experience and practice reflexes for the next race.

Players will pass 8 levels of the game according to the difficulty level with different terrains. In the early levels, the obstructed cars will appear less and do not affect the player much. In the next level, they will encounter many vehicles all on the road at different speeds. Blocked by other cars, preventing players from completing the course on time. If not careful, cars may collide and cause an accident. As the level increases, more signs appear. Along with that, the rugged terrain of the track requires players to react quickly when approaching dangerous roads as well as avoiding obstacles. Their scores are also displayed on the screen by the system. Increasing speed on empty roads, slowing down when encountering obstacles to avoid collisions will be essential for players to achieve high scores in each race. The game will end when the player completes 8 levels.
