The action video game Delta Force: Black Hawk Down is played from the first-person perspective and takes place in Somalia, the setting of the well-known Mogadishu operation. The game is based on actual events detailed in the novel “Black Hawk Down” and the book’s film adaptation. The first fifty percent of the game comprises various tasks that Delta Force members had to complete, such as protecting United Nations food convoys, rescuing hostages, and eliminating weapon shipments.
The second half of the game follows the events that occurred on October 3, 1993, during the mission known as Irene. After two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down, US forces took more than 16 hours to return to safety. The mission’s objective was to capture two lieutenants of the Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid, and it was scheduled to last less than 30 minutes. However, it took US soldiers more than 16 hours to return to safety. 18 United States soldiers, 1 Malaysian, and an unknown number of Somalis were among those who lost their lives—a nineteenth SFC. Two days later, Matt Rierson passed away due to a mortar bombardment.
Most missions require the player to participate as a small Delta Force squad member, acting in conjunction with the United Nations or the United States Army Rangers. When completing some objectives, the player must be a machine gunner aboard a Humvee or a helicopter (including Black Hawks).
