The history of the Final Fantasy series begins with Final Fantasy X-2, the first installment of a straight sequel. The events of this game take place two years after the conclusion of Final Fantasy X, in which Yuna and her guardians destroy Sin and bring peace back to Spira. The Yevon religion has almost entirely vanished, and two political groups have begun to vie with one another for power. These factions are the Youth League, led by Mevyn Nooj, and the New Yevon Party, which Praetor Baralai leads. In the meantime, Yuna’s cousin Rikku stumbles into a particular sphere that, for some unexplained reason, displays an image of Yuna’s only love, Tidus. Yuna receives the globe thanks to Rikku’s efforts. Yuna, who is adamant about solving the riddle, plans a trip called “sphere-hunting,” She will try to locate more of the mysterious spheres dispersed over the planet and, if she’s lucky, find Tidus.
The ATB (active time battle) system, used in the game’s immediate predecessor but replaced with turn-based combat, has been brought back for the sequel. Compared to earlier entries in the series, this game’s action moves at a quicker pace, emphasizing quick decision-making and timing. Throughout the entirety of the game, the player is only able to take control of three characters, all of whom are female: Yuna, her friend Rikku, and Paine. The job system used in this game is quite similar to the one found in Final Fantasy V. Players can study various skills and personalize their character classes. Certain areas now allow for some climbing and jumping, though only on a limited scale. The game’s framework is not as linear as most games in the same genre. Even though there is only one path to follow through the main story, the player can travel to most of the game’s other locations early on, given that the airship is already accessible at that point in the game.
