The wrestling simulation game Fire ProWrestling Returns has a 2D graphical style for its gameplay. The game features a mobility mechanism based on a north-south, east-west axis. This enables movement in two planes simultaneously, giving the impression that you are playing a 3D wrestling game even if the motions are performed in two dimensions.

The core roster of the game includes 327 wrestlers, hailing from over ten of the most prominent wrestling and mixed-martial arts organizations in Japanese culture. The user can mimic classic matches and matchups that could never actually occur, thanks to the extensive roster.

Game modes include a standard exhibition match, tag team exhibition matches with 2 to 4-player teams, a round-robin league tournament featuring up to 64 wrestlers, a sudden elimination tournament featuring up to 16 wrestlers, mixed martial arts matches also known as Ultimate Fighting (with either Pride or K*1 Rules), battle royal matches with up to eight players in the ring at the same time, 5-man team elimination matches, and for the first time in a Fire ProWrestling game, an NXT match.

Users can design their wrestlers, officials, and even entire wrestling companies in the game’s edit mode, complete with their own ring and logo. This game includes over 1,648 maneuvers and holds the user can assign to wrestlers. Additionally, the CPU logic of the wrestlers can be altered to make them behave as if the computer was controlling them.

New to the Fire ProWrestling series and making their debut in Fire ProWrestling Returns are features such as North American cage matches, face layering in edit mode, and ring seconds, sometimes known as managers, who accompany wrestlers to the ring. All of these new additions can be found in the game. In addition, it has over 20 completely new moves, some of which are reanimations of older activities.
