In 2096, the Wanzer (“Walking Tanks” mecha) is the primary fighting vehicle for many militaries. The European Community is amidst a period of relative tranquility when it is surprised by the sudden strikes that an unknown force is launching against German bases. To conduct an investigation, it has been decided to dispatch the “Durandal” arm of the EC Armor Tactics Research Corps. Elsa, a youthful new member at the Durandal, finds herself quickly embroiled in a conspiracy that involves multiple countries. In the meantime, the government of Venezuela is actively working toward achieving independence from the United Continental States (UCS). UCS Forces have been dispatched there to reestablish order and remove Governor Diaz. Sgt. Darril and the other members of his patrol are out on a routine mission when they see a cargo jet being shot down. They quickly learned that the plane had been transporting some of Diaz’s gold as they headed out to investigate. Darryl, and those like him in the demoralized UCS military, may perceive this as an opportunity…

The storyline of Front Mission 4 is a turn-based strategy game, and it alternates between the two separate theaters of operation known as Elsa and Darril. The tale can go in either direction simultaneously, depending on which character controls the wanzer forces. Most fights are fought on an overhead map split into two phases: the Player phase and the Enemy phase. In most situations, a wanzer can only move once before utilizing his remaining Action Points (AP) to attack an opponent or activate an ability. When you perform well in combat, you will gain Experience Points. These points can be traded in for additional skills, such as Rapid Fire or Evasion improvements. Ability slots are filled up in various ways, and each character has a predetermined maximum number of skill slots. Even though every player character begins the game with a predetermined skill preference, there is no cap on what every pilot can learn. You may improve your wanzers and buy new weapons with the money you earn through fighting successfully or finding on the map. Money can be found on the map with other objects.
