There is currently a state of war. There is a battle between several different groups’ leaders for control of their territory. One of these leaders, Liu Bei, wants nothing more than peace for his people. But war stands in his way after the kingdom of Wei, led by the warlord Cao Cao, attacks his land, Shu. Cao Cao also kidnaps Liu Bei’s beloved Diao Chan, the keeper of the Imperial Seal. This puts Liu Bei in a difficult position. Liu Bei is forced to flee, but he solemnly oaths to return, get his revenge on Cao Cao, and set the kingdom of Shu free.
The original Kessen was a real-time strategy game, and its sequel, Kessen II, is also a real-time strategy game. In contrast to the first game, this one takes place during the time of China’s Three Kingdoms. The game’s depiction of historical events is highly dramatized, with numerous additional subplots (such as the entire romantic subplot) and supernatural elements introduced freely throughout the experience. The player can take command of Liu Bei’s or Cao Cao’s forces in the corresponding scenarios.
The gameplay is very similar to the previous game, with the most apparent difference being the transition to supernatural warfare, which includes the addition of magical attacks such as tornadoes, lightning strikes, earthquakes, meteor showers, and other things. Compared to the previous game’s limit of 100, the player has control over up to 500 individual units at once. Now, new sorts of force are available, such as elite horsemen, elephant cavalry, and others.
