After the events of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Raziel finds a method to travel back in time and meets a member of the Circle of the Nine known as Mobius, the timestream. Mobius pushes Raziel to continue his quest for revenge and slay the vampire lord Kain. Raziel gives in against his better judgment and agrees to search for the information and tools to enable him to accomplish his objective finally.

The action-adventure game Soul Reaver 2 is played from the third-person perspective and features puzzle-solving and some platforming gameplay, just like the first game in the series. The player controls Raziel and can move in any direction, climb, fight, swim, jump, and use special skills. The game environment is seen from behind Raziel’s shoulder. Raziel’s unique abilities in the last game have been carried over into this one. These abilities include clinging to the sides of cliffs, scale walls, and gliding downhill using his tattered wings. As in the previous chapter, Raziel can travel freely between the physical and spectral realms, and he exploits distortions between the mirrored worlds to enter previously inaccessible locations. As in the past, for him to maintain his existence in this world, he needs to consume the spirits of his adversaries.

Instead of gaining skills through consuming great souls, Raziel needs to activate specific elemental temples to fill his Soul Reaver sword with power. After being triggered, various “elemental fonts” can charge the Soul Reaver with multiple attributes. Raziel can arm himself with a wide array of additional weapons in addition to the Soul Reaver and his bare hands, some of which include daggers, swords, axes, and spears.

In contrast to its predecessor, Soul Reaver 2 is played linearly on predetermined paths while traveling through various. Once he has left certain areas behind, Raziel cannot return to those locations. The game includes a variety of puzzles, most of which require the manipulation of various devices or the use of blocks. One of the recurring motifs is referred to as “light puzzles,” It requires Raziel to reflect light utilizing mirrored items to bring it into contact with switches or other objects that need to be activated.
