The Mortal Kombat universe serves as the setting for MK: Super Mortal, a 3D platforming adventure beat-em-up game. The events in the novel begin shortly after the first tournament, providing some backstory for various characters that appear throughout the series. This game follows Liu Kang and Kung Lao, also known as the Shaolin Monks, as they fight across numerous places of Earthrealm, Netherrealm, and Outworld to stop another invasion of Earth. MK: SM includes a large cast of known characters, a large number of hidden unlockables, and the ability to play through the game with a friend in co-op mode.
The fights go quickly and feature various options for dispatching foes, such as fatalities and move exclusive to the Mortal Kombat series. This version of Mortal Kombat goes above and beyond what you have seen in other fighting games. Some of the upgrades include the first-ever Multi-Directional Kombat System in the series, Multalities (which allow you to kill multiple opponents with a single move), Brutalities (which cause your health bar to turn red as you unleash brutal force), ko-op-only team-attacks, and even character progression (which allows you to earn experience to spend on upgrades to moves). The environments, which are all based on arenas from Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II, come to life with a variety of perils for the Monks, which they can then use to their advantage against their opponents.
