The college football video game NCAA GameBreaker 2004 features 117 teams from Division I-A and 66 from college football’s classic era.

There is a scrimmage mode, a bowl season mode, a tournament season mode, a career mode, a practice mode, a tournament mode, and an athletic department mode. A scrimmage is a kind of exhibition game that two teams play against one another. The player can play a regular season in Bowl Season or Tournament Season, and if their team is good enough for the postseason, they can then take part in either a bowl game or a tournament playoff, depending on which format they choose. In Career Mode, the player assumes the coach’s role and guides the team to victory. The objective is to have a successful season at a smaller school with the anticipation of receiving either a promotion or a job offer from a more prestigious institution. After activating the Tournament Mode option, the player can immediately begin competing in a tournament. The player is allowed to refine their abilities in the Practice Mode. Users can check rosters, create walk-on players, and recruit other athletes within the Athletic Department mode.

The game includes a style setting that allows the player to play either in simulation mode or arcade mode. Playing in arcade mode makes the game go faster and gives the players on the field more exaggerated moves.
