Raiden III is the sequel to the shoot-em-ups Raiden and Raiden II from the early 1990s. You control the Raiden “Fighting Thunder ME-02” once more as you attempt to repel an alien invasion. There are seven levels in total, with the first three taking place on Earth and the last four in space.

This is a vertically scrolling shoot them up that, like many other vertically scrolling shooters, allows you to play the game in either “Tate” or “Yoko” screen flipping modes, dependent on whether your television is on its side or not.

Technique

It was the first game to utilize the “Taito Type X arcade system” board in arcades. It employs a 3D scrolling system that allows the environment to travel in three dimensions: ascending, descending, and vertically.

Principal Weapons: Yellow Vulcan Shot*

Distributed weapon – fires 2/4 projectiles in 3/5/7 directions.

Green Proton Laser Replaces the “toothpaste” plasma laser characteristic of the Raiden series.

Blue Laser is a new series addition.
Continuous blue Laser directed forward; minor lateral ship movement causes it to swerve.

Secondary WeaponsNuclear Missile* (the “M” upgrade)

Misfire missiles that disperse laterally and then accelerate forward. In addition to damage caused by direct impacts, explosions also cause damage.

Homing Missile (the “H” upgrade)
Targets the closest adversary around the player with homing missiles; weak damage but protects the ship’s flanks.

Radar Missile (the “R” upgrade)
A missile that is partially guided; missiles drift laterally until they are aligned with its target and then charges forward. The explosions of the radar missiles also cause damage.

Smart warhead

A sphere of flame surrounds the ship. The stock of bombs can be increased through explosive power-ups (“B” on a rotating triangle). It can contain up to seven bombs.
