The second installment in the Sonic Riders series, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, is a racing game for hoverboards in the Sonic universe. When four unexplained meteorites collide with the earth, they accidentally activate MeteorTech robots located worldwide, then go on a killing spree. Team Sonic is tasked with unraveling the enigma surrounding MeteorTech and determining the motivations of the robots in their pursuit of meteorites.

This game version includes certain new powers not found in the previous installment. Earning gravity points requires accomplishing several challenges as well as doing various feats. This makes it possible for the Gravity Dive ability, which creates a black hole, draws the player into it, and grants them quicker speed and control over gravity. Alternate passageways through walls and other surfaces can be discovered and utilized by manipulating gravity. Gravity Drift is the name of the third option. Characters can turn tight on corners using this move, just like they could with the Grip move in the game before it. The race course features various goods, challenges, obstacles, and vehicles, such as hoverboards, bicycles, air riders, yachts, air skates, and other types of boats. These can be updated anytime, even while the race is in progress.

The three new game modes are Survival Mode (smash into opponents on particular areas of a track), Survival Relay (relay courses with several players), and Survival Ball (a football game). Each of these games features a different type of competition. There are sixty unique cars, eighteen playable characters, and sixteen various courses, each with two tracks. Most of the playable characters must be unlocked before they can be used. They are separated into three categories: speed, flight, and power, and they each have their specialized equipment, which enables them to take advantage of different and faster routes.
