The fifth installment in the series, Tony Hawk’s Underground, is notable for being the first game to include a genuine career mode.

At the beginning of the game, you take control of an unknown local skater. Your reputation as a nobody is getting to you, and your board shows signs of wear. You are out skating when you come across a flier advertising a professional skateboarder who will give a demo in your city. Attending the skate demo and watching it is something you do. After that, you try to impress the seasoned professional, and in return, he offers you some guidance on achieving success in your field. You and your companion Eric are on your way to achieving legendary status.

You travel throughout several cities to complete a variety of objectives in THUG. You start in New Jersey, which serves as a kind of tutorial level and has straightforward goals for you to achieve. You will, at some point, go to places such as New York City, Vancouver, Moscow, Tampa, San Diego, and Hawaii. Most cities are broken up into distinct chapters, and each new chapter introduces new objectives.

Walking is the new system that THUG has introduced. You can dismount your skateboard any time and run or walk through the course. If there is a high tower that you wish to jump off of, you must first dismount your board, climb to the top of the building (either by using a ladder or by stepping across a wire), and then remount your board to make the jump. One of the new tricks that come with this is called the Acid Drop, and it may send you off of an opposing pipe, giving you the ability to perform tricks with a higher number of rotations, such as the 1080s and higher.

The ability to drive specific vehicles, such as a gardener’s truck, a sports car, or a leaf blower, is another feature that is all unique to THUG. These are used for achieving goals, but they can be unlocked and driven at any time and ny place.

You can construct your decks and tricks in addition to the regular construct-a-Park and Create-a-Skater features. Create-a-Goal is the most critical component of this functionality. You can, for any of the levels, well as your own and choose the pedestrian who will hand it to you, their conversation, and what they will say after you succeed.

The PlayStation 2 version is compatible with playing over the internet.
