A bona fide sibling to its ancestors, “Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel” maintains the post-apocalyptic, adrenaline-infused, role-playing first-person shooter aesthetic for which the series is known. Originating from the brains at 2K Australia and the creative maestros of the BioShock series, in collaboration with Gearbox Software, this game sequel reaffirms the celebrated Borderlands series in its continued journey.

SETTING THE SCENE

The setting of this riveting chapter in the Borderlands series occurs between the original game and its sequel. The Pre-Sequel catapults us to Pandora’s Moon, a location bustling with the undertakings of our familiar anti-heroes. Handsome Jack, the notable nemesis from Borderlands 2, is our protagonist’s employer this time. As the narrative unfolds, we’re privy to his transformation and witness how this tale masterfully knits together the plots of the first two Borderlands games.

WHO ARE WE?

Four different heroes, each a part of the intricate Borderlands universe, offer us a selection to play. Athena, the Gladiator from “The Secret Armory of General Knoxx,” Wilhelm the Enforcer, one of Borderlands 2’s memorable bosses; Nisha the Lawbringer, an optional boss from Borderlands 2; and the always entertaining Fragtrap and Claptrap, the combat variant of the series’ robotic mascot. These characters each come with a unique skill set; Athena, for instance, works as a tank with a kinetic shield that can be hurled at opponents.

GUNS AND GRAVITY

The Pre-Sequel boasts a sophisticated weaponry system akin to its predecessor, Borderlands 2. Yet, it’s not all old news here. The team at 2K Australia took the lunar setting to heart, incorporating new game mechanics that leverage the moon’s reduced gravity. Oxygen now becomes a critical element requiring strategic management. As a hilarious twist, gas cylinders can be used as makeshift jetpacks! New weaponry has also been introduced to add more fun to the chaos, like guns that can turn enemies into popsicles.

A VISION IN MOONLIGHT

Visually, The Pre-Sequel closely follows the aesthetic of its precursors. The comic book-like visuals persist, but the lunar setting necessitates some artistic alterations. Landscapes and vistas shift to capture the otherworldly, barren beauty of the moon, all while maintaining the Borderlands’ distinct visual style.

BAND TOGETHER

Cooperative play is a critical component in The Pre-Sequel, consistent with the Borderlands tradition. With support for up to four players, you and your friends can pick your favorite characters and unite in tackling missions and sending enemies packing. Teamwork may make the dream work, but it also makes for chaotic, laugh-out-loud fun in Borderlands. Whether you’re a seasoned Borderlands veteran or a newcomer to the series, this game will have you clapping along with Claptrap.
