INTRODUCTION

Emerging from the shadows of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One’s 2013 debut, FIFA 18 was in an unusual situation. While EA continued to churn out editions for the now-considered ‘vintage’ PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the less polished editions for these consoles paled compared to their counterparts. One example was the PlayStation 3 edition, which wasn’t furnished with the esteemed Frostbite engine, exclusive to versions made for PCs, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Add to that the conspicuous absence of The Journey mode and Icon cards in FIFA Ultimate Team. The PlayStation 3 version of FIFA 18 saw a facelift in team updates and club attire alterations but not much else.

REVOLUTIONIZING GAME MECHANICS

FIFA 18 came to the table with many innovations, building upon the foundation of FIFA 17. One groundbreaking addition was the Real Players Motion technology, a state-of-the-art animation system that brought the footballers to life. Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid fame was among those who collaborated in developing this technology. This system ensures the virtual replicas of football greats look, move, and behave exactly like their real-world counterparts.

STRATEGIC FOOTBALLER PERFORMANCE

In an impressive display of the technology’s adaptability, Real Players Motion doesn’t just focus on the most acclaimed footballers. It considers numerous factors, such as height and attributes, subtly affecting the performances of all players. For example, a physically imposing defender has a high probability of defeating a weaker opponent, but if that weaker player is skilled, they can still present a significant challenge. Also, players with exceptional talent, like Lionel Messi, have a noticeable advantage in ball handling and feinting.

GAME MODES: BEYOND THE USUAL

FIFA 18 offers a selection of licensed leagues and players and significantly changes its game modes. The story-driven career mode features an enticing continuation named “The Journey: Hunter Returns,” tracking the rise of Premier League hopeful Alex Hunter. This mode takes players around the globe, rubbing shoulders with top footballers like Cristiano Ronaldo, with on-pitch and off-pitch decisions shaping the narrative.

REVAMPED CAREER MODE

The conventional career mode, where players manage a single club, was also spruced up. Transfer systems were overhauled, and an all-new window was introduced in the menu to track attractive footballers and negotiate contracts. Now, players could deal with clubs, individual players, or agents. If needed, the assistant’s help is always available. Additionally, the AI actively responds to player offers, pushing for the best deals. Cut scenes show the finalization of transfers and award ceremonies for added realism.

THE INCLUSION OF ICONS IN FIFA ULTIMATE TEAM

A noteworthy feature added in FIFA 18 (only for XONE, PS4, PC, and Switch) is the introduction of Icons in the FIFA Ultimate Team mode. These unique cards represent legendary footballers such as Pele, Thierry Henry, and Ronaldinho. These cards are divided into three types, representing different stages of the players’ careers, each differing in statistics. For instance, Pele’s passing skills in 1958 are far from his prime in the 1970 version.

A NOD TO CRISTIANO RONALDO

As a cherry on top, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo graces the cover of this edition, further immortalizing the football superstar. Ronaldo’s collaboration with the developers didn’t just end with being a cover star; he was actively involved in shaping FIFA 18. In a pre-release build-up, a trial version of the game was made available for subscribers of EA Access (Xbox One) and Origin Access (PC) services.
