Dissidia 012 is the precursor to Square Enix’s title Dissidia: Final Fantasy, released in 2009, and it also includes the tale of the original game, which has been retold to accommodate the game’s new mechanics. The narrative of Dissidia 012 focuses on the twelve-cycle portion of the ongoing War of the Gods and the heroes who were called to the realm for that particular cycle.

When playing in free-play mode, the game’s objective is to emerge victorious over a specific foe or a series of adversaries; in story mode, the aim is to emerge victorious through a series of dungeons that feature adversaries. The gameplay is very similar to that of its predecessor, although some improvements have been made, such as adding an Assist system. This system allows you to call on another character to execute attacks on your opponent or to take a hit on your behalf. A free-roaming game world has also been added to the game’s story mode, with the tile-based structure of the game’s predecessor being kept exclusively for the dungeons that may be accessed from the gameworld through “gateways.” Character advancement and the ability to customize one’s weapons and skills are both present and unchanged.

A character roster that spans the entirety of the Final Fantasy series, from the first game to the thirteenth, as well as every game in between, is now rather extensive.

In addition to that, it comes with downloadable content in the form of alternate skins for several of the playable characters as well as an extra help character that can only be obtained by purchasing the Dissidia Duodecim prologue Final Fantasy prologue chapter, which is presented as its own game.
