Hot Pixel is a casual game in a pixelized setting that combines street culture, digital lifestyle, and old-school video games. It comprises 200 mini-games, either randomly selected from a pool in one mode or grouped into 10 episodes in another way, and are linked with cut scenes portraying the adolescent DJON.

Like the WarioWare games, each micro-game lasts only a few seconds. During this limited time, the player must figure out what he is expected to perform using a short statement that appears when the game begins. There are additional instructional and training options available. After completing a certain amount of microgames, the player is given a longer “boss” micro-match that is often more difficult to achieve the level. Some of the games have suggestive themes or explicit content.

As you go through the games, more ones are unlocked, or various modes are provided, such as removing the time constraint. Other features include a character rating mode, a music jukebox, a list of unlocked video segments, and playlists to construct a list of favorite games and share them over the internet or memory sticks. Three modes are available for the playlists: Challenge (play through a selection), Survive (attempt to keep playing for a specific time), and Freeplay. An Ad Hoc multiplayer mode allows you to compete with a friend for the highest score. A gauge is filled when you play well. When maxed out, it can send a “disturber” that changes the display of the opponent’s screen.

Some microgames borrow ideas from established games like Battlezone and Breakout. Other games are available for download from the developer’s website and can be imported using a memory stick.
