The Legos strike back in the sequel to the original LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game, where players can now explore the classic Star Wars trilogy (Episodes IV, V, and VI). Players replicate all three original Star Wars films using LEGO-sized Star Wars characters. All sets and props are made of LEGO bricks and maintain features like the capacity to be rebuilt and fall apart. Like its predecessor, the game puts its take on the series by adding a lighthearted, funny touch to the movies and employing no language.

LEGO Star Wars II is a third-person action/platforming game. Players take control of Star Wars characters and vehicles. In Story Mode, players use LEGO bricks to recreate significant events from the original films. Each character has weaponry, such as lightsabers for Jedi or crossbows for Wookies, as well as new attacks and tactics. Each character also has unique skills, such as Jedi, who can use the force; R2-D2, who can unlock doors; and Boba Fett, who can use his jetpack. It is up to the player to employ these talents to solve easy puzzles and progress through the game’s levels. Vehicle stages are more significant than in the last game, with longer sections devoted to operating classic Star Wars vehicles.

A co-op feature lets two players go through the Story feature in addition to a single-player game. The AI controls the second character in single-player mode. The Free-play feature, like the first game, lets players go back and repeat beaten levels with any playable character they have unlocked. A new feature allows users to mix and match LEGO figures and vehicles. Power Brock goods and currency stubs obtained in Story Mode will allow players to experiment with different characters, cars, etc.
