Madden NFL 09 for PSP is the latest installment in the series of annual updates to the game. It is pretty similar to its predecessor regarding the available modes and features. In addition to the standard roster updates, it includes several new features to make the game more accessible to players with less experience.
Each gameplay mode from the previous year—play now, franchise, mini-camp, practice, and Superstar Challenge—has been brought back. The challenges have been modernized, and at this point, they incorporate scenarios from the season of 2007. The game has a Rookie Mode, which simplifies the controls by reducing them to a few buttons and offers instructions suggesting what to push and when to do it. This mode is intended for players who are new to the game. The playcalling system has been overhauled with both simple and complex choices, keeping in mind novice players as a consideration during the process. An additional feature is a unique defensive camera, which, in contrast to most football games, places the camera behind the defensive line, with the offense moving toward the screen. This is a new addition to the game.
