Utawarerumono is a tactical RPG and visual novel adventure game for PC, PS2, and PSP. It takes place in a world based on the art and culture of the Ainu people, who used to live in northern Japan. Leaf and Aquaplus put together the game. Visual novel fans know these creators well because they made popular series like To Heart, Tears to Tiara, and White Album. Scenes and scripts that were sexual in the game’s PC version were taken out of all console versions. There have also been two sequels to Utawarerumono (Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth) for PlayStation 4, and PS Vita, as well as comic books, anime series, and radio plays based on the story.

Plot

In Utawarerumono, players enter a fantasy world based on Japan in the Middle Ages. The title is about a man named Hakuoro who wears a mask. When the man was hurt, two young girls from a small village whose grandmother had raised him found him. The main character has lost his memory and doesn’t know where he came from or where he was going. After spending a long time in the settlement, he discovers that the emperor, who controls the whole area, makes life hard for the people there. Hakuoro can’t deal with what’s going on, so he starts a resistance movement and a military campaign to eliminate the cruel ruler and make a new, fair state. The culture of the Ainu people, who live on the Japanese island of Hokkaido and the southern part of the Sakhalin peninsula, gave the writers of Utawarerumono ideas for the world they made. You can see these influences in things like the heroes’ clothes and the names of different places.

Mechanics

Utawarerumono is a typical visual novel for the most part. But there are also tactical battles that take place between the adventure parts. Each character who does what the main hero tells them to do is described by a set of statistics standards in RPGs. We also get to change our gear and learn new skills between missions. Battles happen on maps drawn in an isometric view and have grids that units move on.

How things work

In Utawarerumono, the battles take place on two-dimensional maps where sprites of our characters and their opponents move around. Voice-oversTrained actors do voice-overs for all dialogue.
