When compared to its predecessor, Worms: Open Warfare 2 features an increased number of levels, weapons, gameplay modes, and customization possibilities. Once more, each player is in control of a team of tiny worms that are armed with unconventional yet potent weaponry. The game aims to wipe out the enemy team while traversing fully destructible terrain.

You can compete against friends and foes in multiplayer with up to four teams, with support for offline, wireless, and new online play, as well as various schemes and new game modes like Forts and Race. You can play the game solo in Campaign mode, which involves playing through various missions connected by a storyline with animated sequences; you can take on multiple challenges in Puzzle mode, or you can play the game in multiplayer with up to four teams.

In addition, players can maintain the uniqueness of their teams by personalizing everything ranging from worm names and soundbanks to victory dances and the team flag. Players can also use the flag editor to create their unique banners. It is also possible to customize the battlefield using the new map types, including Pirates, World War I, World War II, Cold War, Gulf War, and Future War, and a map editor. Other map kinds include Future War. There is a more extensive selection of weapons and utilities available to choose from, including the newly added Electromagnet, Boomerang, Bunker Buster, and Sentry Gun, as well as the return of fan favorites such as the Holy Hand Grenade, Concrete Donkey, Super Sheep, and many others.

In addition, the DS version adds a Laboratory mode (mini-games that use the touchscreen and microphone), a stylus-based interface, and a scrollable mini-map. In contrast, the PSP version offers an online lobby with rankings and clans, a Time Attack mode, a zoomable map, downloadable content, and hats. The PSP version also offers downloadable material.
