Battlefield 3 is the direct sequel to Battlefield 2 and the 11th installment in the Battlefield franchise. Powered by the Frostbite 2 engine, Battlefield 3 aims to provide the series’ trademark fast-paced, team-oriented online multiplayer while introducing the first single-player campaign in a numbered Battlefield game and, for the first time in any Battlefield game, a cooperative mode. The game also features the Battlelog feature, an in-browser service that provides detailed statistics for individual soldiers, such as their Win/Loss ratio, favorite weapon, accuracy, etc. Battlelog also allows users to form Platoons, similar to clans, in that they keep the metrics of a group and scrimmaging, voice communications, and parties, which will seek to join friends and platoon members into squads if possible. Although settings are changed in-game, the game can also be launched from Battlelog.

The campaign takes place in the not-too-distant future of 2014, with players taking on the role of Staff Sergeant Henry Blackburn and, on occasion, other members of his five-person unit. The missions occur in a disjointed, flashback fashion as Blackburn recounts his encounter with the PLR – a dangerous terrorist organization that may be after chemical and nuclear weapons – for most of the story. The campaign is similar to most other shooters in that the player employs various weapons to kill foes and progress through each scenario, often supported by AI friends. The campaign offers some variation, occasionally allowing the player to ride inside tanks, jets, and helicopters – but unlike multiplayer, the player is rarely allowed to control these vehicles.

Conquest, the classic Battlefield mode in which teams compete to control various points on a map and drain the enemy team’s tickets – Rush, in which attackers attempt to destroy M-Com stations and defenders must dwindle their tickets to 0 to win; Team Deathmatch, which is self-explanatory, and a Squad based variation of Rush and Deathmatch in which individual squads try to take the M-Com Stations for themselves or wipe out other details. There are many classes, as in previous Battlefield games. The Assault class carries assault rifles, medic kits, and defibrillators to heal and revive comrades. The Support class takes ammo packs and light machine guns to restock comrades and C4 to damage tanks or demolish buildings. The Engineer class employs submachine guns, a blow torch for vehicle maintenance, and a rocket launcher for vehicle destruction. Finally, the Recon class has long-range guns and uses motion detectors and movable spawn sites to identify opponents and allow friendly spawn locations to appear wherever on the battlefield. All types can gain additional gadgets and specialties, and each weapon has an unlock tree that grants weapon-specific goodies based on how frequently and well that weapon has been used. The same is valid for vehicles, which include tanks, IFVs, Armored personnel carriers, hummers, jeeps, helicopters, and jets returning from Battlefield 2.

The game’s console variants support fewer players and smaller maps. In the Console incarnations, only 24 players can connect online. Because it cannot run without a DirectX 10 or 11 card, the PC version only supports Windows Vista or Windows 7.
