Bulletstorm is an exciting first-person shooter. The protagonist is Grayson ‘Gray’ Hunt, the captain of a space pirate crew of former soldiers from the elite army unit Dead Echo. During an assassination mission, they uncovered their commander General Serrano’s nefarious motivations ten years ago. The unit’s mission was to clear its tracks by removing opposition parties, this time a journalist with damaging information on the general. Today, the company stumbles upon the Ulysses, a spaceship with their previous captain on board, and drunken Gray resolves to destroy the vessel in a suicidal strike. Both ships collide on the planet Stygia, formerly a popular tourist attraction but now a dangerous environment teeming with mutants of all kinds. Ishi, his brother-in-arms and the second person to survive the “landing,” was severely damaged and required a cyborg transformation operation to live. Gray hates himself for everything that has occurred and tells Ishi that he will get him off the planet and to a good doctor.

A skill shots system underpins the gameplay. The player receives skill points when an adversary is killed under particular scenarios, such as pounding them onto spikes or decapitating them with a headshot. The greater the number of simultaneous skill shots, the greater the payout. Skill points are spent on drop kits for weapon improvements such as alternate firing mode, increased ammo capacity, and ammunition. Though the weapons are distinctive (drill gun, bouncing spheres, grenade launcher), the leg and energy leash is the most helpful skill shot utility. Leg allows the player to kick foes into the air, slow time, and manipulate enemies in close quarters. The leash allows for more, such as pulling foes and weapons toward the player or beating crowds skyward. They also allow interaction with certain things, such as obstacles. There is no health bar, as in most modern shooters. Players must simply wait until the blood-splattered screen clears and Gray is healed. The levels are broken into checkpoints.

The game modes do not stop with the single-player story campaign. Echoes is a cut-scene-free level replay option in which the player is urged to complete the level as quickly as possible and compete with other players’ results on online leaderboards. Anarchy is a four-player cooperative mode in which enemy waves must be resisted to progress to the next wave (up to 20).
