The third primary Call of Duty game is set in Normandy, France. It is based on Operation Cobra, a World War II operation planned by United States Army General Omar Bradley to break out of the Normandy area following the previous month’s D-Day landings. In 14 historical single-player missions covering the 88 days leading up to the liberation of Paris, you play as four allied sides with American, Canadian, British, and Polish soldiers. Surprisingly, you cannot play as the French 2nd Armored Division, responsible for liberating Paris.

Battles are frequently theatrical, with multiple clashes and scripted events co-occurring, including soldiers and vehicles in semi-destructible surroundings. There is cinematics that explains the circumstances in between. A few gameplay aspects have been preserved or returned, like slight auto-aim, the damage system that lets you recover if you hide for a short time, and smoke grenades. New additions include tossing unexploded grenades back at the player and actions requiring successful button presses. This can happen in hand-to-hand combat when you can yank the weapon from the enemy’s hands. Enemies work in groups, employ various methods, and seek cover.

Standard deathmatch (combat), team deathmatch (team battle), Capture the Flag (either with two flags or two sides aiming to control a single, neutral flag), and Headquarters (two sides either defend or attack a structure, and players can now respawn after dying) are the main multiplayer modes. The gameplay of the new War mode is similar to that of the Battlefield series. Each team begins with two control points and one neutral flag in the center. The goal is to control all five flags.

There are various multiplayer classes, including Rifleman, Heavy Assault, Light Assault, Medic, Scout, Support, and Anti-Armor, as well as multiple-occupancy vehicles (Sherman Tank, Panzer IV, Jeep, Horch, BMW, Harley). Each class has its own set of powers. There are also two ranking systems: a standard rank system during a single game in which your abilities develop if you perform well and an overall TrueSkill ranking. In addition, unlike previous games, your team remains grouped after a match and is not immediately booted back to the lobby.
