The imaginary island of Banoi, located near Papua New Guinea in Oceania, has a lush environment with beaches, jungle, mountains, and modern buildings that make it a paradise resort. The protagonist awakens from a nightmare after a night of partying and drinking. The island has been overtaken by zombies, who are gradually converting more and more humans to their cause. The protagonist, on the other hand, appears to be immune to this. The remaining survivors have withdrawn to several outposts throughout the island, attempting to hold the fort. Above all, the protagonist’s mission is to stay alive, defend the inhabitants of the isle against the zombie invasion, and eventually discover a route off the island.

Dead Island is a horror-themed first-person action game with substantial RPG components. The game features a lot of free-roaming gameplay. The enormous island can be explored in any direction, except for a few sections where the player is notified that the playable region will be left behind. The majority of the gameplay and progression are quest-based. Survivors give prizes for finding lost family members, scavenging stuff, and doing simple chores like returning a teddy bear. There are main quests that advance the overall tale, which are organized into chapters and several optional sidequests. The island can be explored on foot or by automobile. The gameplay is intense and action-oriented. Even though outrunning zombies may avoid many encounters, the player is constantly encouraged to engage in combat.

Purna, Logan, Sam B, and Xian are the four characters to pick from. They begin with diverse limits and specialize in blunt weapons, sharp weapons, firearms, or throwing weapons. Experience points are earned by performing objectives and defeating zombies. These are utilized in an RPG-style leveling system where players can invest skill points in one of three different ability trees. Combat and survival skills and a particular Fury category are included – a talent related to a specific character. Fury is usually a special attack that can be utilized by beating adversaries after filling up a bar. Because most of the landscape can be explored freely, a level scaling mechanism similar to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is implemented. Opponents become more robust as the player character levels and new weapons discovered or purchased are identical. As a result, the game’s complexity remains constant, with no opportunities to backtrack and overcome weaker opponents. Areas are never wholly cleansed; monsters and things usually reappear when a section is returned.

Weapons purchased or found in the environment range from baseball bats to wrenches, firearms, knives, crowbars, and Molotov cocktails. On the other hand, weapons decay quickly, and if the player wishes to keep them, they must be fixed regularly at a workbench in return for gold. Weapons can also be upgraded at that place. Notable improvements to weapons are unlocked via discovering blueprints. It is feasible, for example, to add nails to a baseball bat or to electrify and fire firearms. Regular fists and a kick can be used to push the zombies back or knock them down. Targeting specific locations, such as the neck, deals extra damage, and by focusing on particular limbs, they can be severed to slow down or immobilize opponents. Attacking and running deplete stamina, which is recovered over time, as opposed to health, which requires energy drinks or medkits. Exploration of the surroundings and structures for loot is encouraged. This gives you money and unique things you can sell or use to alter your weapons. Attacking with melee weapons necessitates precise timing to land attacks and escape oncoming punches. When a player character is defeated, they respawn nearby, albeit with a monetary penalty and, in rare cases, the loss of a weapon. There are merchants where you may buy or sell stuff. The game also includes rare, one-of-a-kind, and legendary weaponry. It is possible to pick up objects, throw them, and shoot things into the environment, causing explosions or fires.

Most of the navigation is done via a map with quest goals, notable landmarks noted, and a path. When hubs are discovered, moving quickly between them is possible. The majority of the characters are approachable. The game supports cooperative gameplay for up to four offline and online players.
