Disney Infinity is an action-adventure game that uses physical figurines to interact with the game, akin to the Skylanders franchise. The critical difference in approach is that Infinity emphasizes character development and experimenting with various components. The initial version of the game includes the infinity base and three figurines (Sulley, Mr. Incredible, and Jack Sparrow). The bottom has two slots for figures, which are then imported into the game as playable characters. It also features a hexagonal space to put up to three power discs. These improve the game by changing the environment and scenery or adding additional vehicles or weapons. As perks, red ability discs are put beneath a character on the base, with a maximum of two per character and four total. Toy discs in orange add gadgets and vehicles. Purple customizing discs change the atmosphere and sky. There is a limit of three orange and purple discs at a time. Discs are available individually, in series, blind packages, and through specific promotions and merchants. The same is true of figurines and play sets. There are also uncommon discs with a hologram in the center.

Characters and settings are inspired by Disney and Pixar films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, The Incredibles, Cars, and Toy Story, among others. The game has two modes: Play Set and Toy Box. Play Sets are campaigns that revolve around a specific franchise and have a variety of objectives. Each Play Set has its world, and only characters from that franchise can be used. Play Sets can be played in split-screen mode with two players collaborating. Objects and vehicles for the Toy Box mode can be unlocked during these campaigns. Almost every character (except those from non-humanoid series such as Cars) shares activities such as several attacks and double jumps, but each figurine also has a unique skill.

Toy Box mode removes most constraints, allowing players to design their game in an open-world setting. Each character, weapon, gadget, vehicle, and location can be mixed and matched. The mode’s tools are introduced through a series of in-game tutorials. Multiplayer is also accessible, and characters can be leveled up and “spins” gained by completing particular Play Sets.

Multiplayer is only available in the Toy Box on the Wii, not in the Play Sets (offline and online). The GamePad is used in the Wii U version to access mission logs, packs, tools in Play Sets, and toys in Toy Box mode. Although the PC version is free, physical figurines are not supported. These are instead downloaded as DLC.
