Fable III is the third installment in the Fable action role-playing game series. The title is set in the fictitious continent of Albion and takes place fifty years after the events of Fable II.

After defeating Lucien, the previous game’s Hero is credited for ushering in a new period of peace and prosperity to the kingdom. The Hero united and strengthened Albion, establishing a kingdom where various communities once existed. That Hero had two offspring, the elder of whom, Logan, grew to rule the realm as the fabled Hero’s successor. While he was the first a kind monarch, his policies and forces became increasingly harsh. The sound of revolution has begun to ring out across the country.

Unlike the previous titles’ mostly medieval-style themes, Albion has entered the industrial age (probably due to the last game’s Hero’s uncontrolled expansion). As a result, Fable III’s style is reminiscent of the United States and Great Britain throughout the 18th century and the American Revolution.

Players assume the role of Logan’s sibling, progressively increasing his strength and powers and finally assembling an army to defeat his brother and take control of Albion. A devoted companion joins the new Hero in the form of a dog. The game retains the option to work jobs, buy real estate, and get married, and a focused core storyline broken up by many tasks. Once again, the player can choose to be good or evil, and their actions affect the game environment and other characters. Weapons can also be altered based on how the player progresses through the quest.

A novel feature is that the player is entrusted with assembling an army to overthrow his sibling. To gain the strength to destroy Logan, the player must “play politics” with the population of Albion, which may entail making promises and keeping them once the player has won control of the kingdom.

Fable III also includes a more developed online and multiplayer mode than Fable II. Rather than simply acting as a henchman for other online players, player’s Hero characters can engage and quest with one another on an equal footing.

The “Hardcore Mode” difficulty level is available in the Windows version of the game.
