Gears of War is a tactical third-person shooter in which the player takes control of Marcus Fenix, a member of Delta Squad, to save the human residents of the fictitious planet Sera from The Locust Horde. The plot, told in five acts and thirty chapters, involves humans reuniting their strength after years of fighting over cheap energy in the Pendulum Wars to meet this new alien danger.

Unlike many other shooters, the emphasis is on team-based actions and cover-dependent tactics rather than outright aggression. The game needs the player to constantly hunt for cover alternatives, which the player then assaults, spins, and rolls to pop out rapidly. A “roadie run” is accomplished by holding a button to sprint to another area. Marcus is part of a larger squad. However, another human player can jointly play Dominic Santiago to battle (split-screen, system link, or online). Sometimes, the paths will be divided to tackle different challenges. Players can only carry two guns, a sidearm, and a few grenades. There are submachine guns, sniper and assault rifles, grenades, grenade launchers, and handguns. Still, the primary weapon is the COG Lancer Assault Rifle, which may also be utilized in close combat as a chainsaw bayonet. There are also some unusual weapons, such as the Torque Bow, which uses explosive arrows, and the Hammer of Dawn, which causes an orbiting satellite to shoot a laser at certain adversaries.

All guns must be manually reloaded. By pushing a button on a meter at the right time, the weapon is filled with more damage and at a faster rate with perfect timing, or it jams when timed incorrectly. Instead of a health bar, the game features the Crimson Omen, a cog-shaped indicator that fills with blood when the player is injured.

Versus, in addition to Co-op multiplayer, offers three game modes: Warzone (deathmatch), Execution (deathmatch, but with the addition of “fatalities” to eliminate foes), and Assassination (concentrate on destroying each other opponent’s team leader).
