Homefront imagines a future in which the United States has been dethroned as the world’s preeminent powerhouse. In the year 2027, a unified Korea launched an invasion of the United States. The player takes control of Robert Jacobs, a former military pilot forced into conscription by the Korean army but is eventually freed by a local resistance cell. Since he is now on the run, Jacobs has no option but to assist the resistance as they go outside San Francisco searching for remnants of the United States Army. John Milius, who also wrote the screenplays for Red Dawn and Apocalypse Now, is responsible for writing Homefront.

Jacobs and three other members of the resistance are the protagonists of the single-player campaign, which chronicles their exploits as they engage in guerrilla warfare and attempt to flee the walled city of Montrose, Colorado. The gameplay is highly similar to that of the Modern Warfare series, right down to the usage of snap-targeting, aiming down the sights, and the general layout of the control scheme. The player always has access to two weapons at any moment, and the attachments and scopes on any weapons that adversaries drop are entirely random. The “Goliath” robotic assault vehicle is the centerpiece of the Homefront gameplay experience that stands out as the most original and innovative element. During the game, the user will have many opportunities to use a targeting indicator to instruct the Goliath, an otherwise autonomous vehicle, to fire its weapons at particular enemies or tanks. Upon its first release, the single-player campaign was subjected to a great deal of criticism for being unusually brief.

In the multiplayer mode, aspects of the fast-paced foot fighting seen in the Modern Warfare series are combined with elements of the vehicle warfare seen in games like Frontlines: Fuel of War. During gameplay, players acquire experience points (XP) attached to their characters and contribute to an overall higher “rank.” Players also gain “Battle Points” throughout battles, which are used in a manner analogous to Counter-Strike and can be spent on new weapons, upgrades, and vehicles for only the current match. “Battle Commander” is a unique multiplayer mode exclusive to Homefront. In this mode, players are led by an artificial intelligence commander that watches over them. Each player will receive their own unique set of objectives, which may include specific adversary players to track down and eliminate. The player’s notoriety rises due to their successful completion of goals, leading to more critical missions, increased support from the A.I. commander, and growing attention from the opposing commander.

On all the consoles and the P.C., the multiplayer mode may accommodate up to 32 players, who can compete in two teams of 16. To participate in multiplayer, players must first redeem a “Battle Code,” which can be included for free in new game copies or purchased separately. This system is analogous to that of Electronic Arts’ Online Pass.
