L.A. Noire is a hard-boiled detective game set in 1947 in Los Angeles. Players control LAPD officer Cole Phelps as he works his way through the ranks of his department to solve a series of murder mysteries, drawing heavily on the style of cinema noir. Each case is its segment of the game, although there is an overall tale with recurrent characters and Phelps’ past while fighting during WWII. He begins as a patrolman and progresses to traffic detective, homicide, vice, and finally, arson investigator. A new partner and new venues become accessible with each promotion.

During a case, the game alternates between slower investigative components and short scenes involving on-foot and car chases and gunplay. There is a great emphasis on the story and character development, often accompanied by lengthy cinematic sequences. Even though the game provides a great deal of freedom by exploring by automobile and on foot, it cannot be compared to Grand Theft Auto due to several limitations. Random bystanders cannot be harmed while playing as a detective, and gunplay is limited to specified scenes. Furthermore, each case is limited to a specific number of venues. The player can choose the inquiry sequence, but the game will not progress until a satisfactory conclusion to the case is reached. Phelps can take optional side investigations through dispatch calls in addition to the primary story.

When arriving at the scene of a murder, it is necessary to search for clues that can be researched. When Phelps comes by, the game provides hints in rumbling and an auditory bell, but these can also be deactivated. After gathering evidence, the next stage is frequently questioning witnesses and suspects. Character faces have been animated using MotionScan motion capture technology, and the exquisite realism of these captures is utilized as a gameplay aspect. When speaking with characters, the facts and tone of voice, especially their facial expressions, are significant. Characters will occasionally glance aside or exhibit tics and faces that give information. During interrogation, the player must interpret them and choose one of three options: Truth, Doubt, or Lie. Different routes and reactions emerge as a result of the decision. Failed action sequences can be replayed, but if the player repeatedly misinterprets the scenario and the investigation comes to a halt, the entire case must be replayed. There are several opportunities to remedy mistakes and try a different method, typically following the analysis of clues.

Each case takes approximately one hour to finish. The player obtains ranks that grant intuition points based on the speed and correct intuition used to solve instances. When stuck in a conversation, these might be used to remove choices.
