The four-player mayhem of the previous Marvel Ultimate Alliance and, before that, the X-Men Legends series continues in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. It is based on the Secret Wars and Civil War comic book tales. Following Nick Fury’s unauthorized super-hero assault on Latveria and a fight gone awry in Connecticut, the government adopts the super-human registration act, which mandates all super-powered persons to divulge their names to the government. At one point in the story, you must choose whether to support or oppose registration, and certain heroes will always be on one side or the other, locking them out if you take the opposite path. After this moment, the game alters based on the storyline you select.

All four heroes are always active during the game unless they are knocked out. Certain team combinations, such as the X-Men or Fantastic Four, will provide you with a benefit that differs by team if the number of players is less than four. You can change characters at any moment. Every character has a health and stamina meter. The stamina meter recharges itself and regulates power usage. Each hero has a jump (depending on the surface, can also be used to double-jump, fly, or web-swing), a grab, a rapid strike, and a devastating strike. These can be used in conjunction to perform actions like jumping attacks, picking up an enemy and punching them, and so on. When these are combined with a modifier button, you can employ powers. Each hero possesses a vast range of abilities. Leveling up grants you points to spend on strengthening your capabilities. You can reassign the points and switch between powers at any moment.

Defeating adversaries and shattering ambient items grants you health refills and points to upgrade each hero’s statistics. There are also health icons to be obtained. You may transport two of them at once. Each icon can be utilized to instantaneously fully heal or revive a character who has been knocked unconscious. You can also carry items that provide stat boosts, such as more excellent HP or a bonus for special damage.

You start with a few characters and can unlock more by progressing through the game or completing specified tasks. Each character has a second costume that can be opened. What you have to do to get it differs by character.

You will have conversations with many NPCs throughout the game. Some of them have distinct reactions to different characters. You can choose an aggressive, diplomatic, or defensive response at critical stages. You can unlock boosters by answering in a specific manner enough times.

Adding fusions and two-character team-up attacks significantly departs from the previous game. You fill a fusion meter by beating foes and have up to two fusions at once. Any two characters have their fusion. There are three basic types: Specific fusions, such as Things throwing Mr. Fantastic at someone. You target with the left stick while slamming a button to increase power. These deal much damage to a single target and are great for bosses. There are also clearing fusions, such as Storm reflecting her illumination off Wolverine. These do damage to all opponents within a certain radius. You can extend the radius by pressing a button. Clearing fusions help get rid of a swarm of foes. Finally, there are guided fusions, such as Iceman and Human Torch blasting their powers at each other and then mowing down anyone who gets in their way. These are useful for cleaning out adversaries who are dispersed. To accelerate them, you press a button. Every fusion has a “high score.” This is the number of foes you must defeat. You will receive a health token if you complete this.
