With the simultaneous demise of Darkseid and Shao Kahn in their realities, a freak portal accident has created a new monster that is more evil and powerful, representing the worst of both worlds: Dark Kahn.

Dark Kahn seeks to merge the DC universe and the Mortal Kombat universe into one reality, forcing heroes and villains alike to form unlikely alliances to keep their facts separate before they are consumed by “The Rage,” a force that causes people to lose their minds and become destroyed by their aggression.

The DC and Mortal Kombat universes are represented by ten champions and one “boss” character in an arcade-style fighting game for 22 fighters. The gameplay is similar to the previous two Mortal Kombat games (with some 3D aspects), concentrating on special moves rather than the complicated combos in the last three games (Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon).

There are also new fighting modes in the game, such as Klose Kombat, Freefall Kombat, and “Test Your Might,” which use the environment as a mini-game style scenario to inflict stylized and extensive damage on an opponent, and “Rage,” which turns standard moves into a devastating opportunity to crush your opponent. Players must battle through locations such as Gotham City, Metropolis, the Shaolin Temples, and Earthrealm’s Hell.

Fatalities are still included for the Kombatants and villains, like in every Mortal Kombat game. However, they are slightly toned down to match the DC norms of heroes such as Superman and Batman sticking to their moral code and not murdering their opponents. As a result, the DC heroes engage in “Heroic Brutalities,” effectively knocking their opponent out of commission.

Players can also take their fights online for ranking bouts and play against a friend or another online opponent in tournaments.
