Alex Mercer has a problem or a talent, depending on your point of view. Because of a virus in his system, he possesses various lethal abilities. He can transform into any person he consumes, which essentially involves brutally killing the person he wants to be. Of course, Alex did not request this “improvement.” Instead, he was a participant in a genetic experiment at Gentek. He is now hunting for vengeance and his history, losing his memory. Meanwhile, the second specimen, Elizabeth Green, infects more and more portions of Manhattan Island with a virus mutation that turns people into mindless zombies or terrible monsters.

The prototype is an open-world game akin to Grand Theft Auto IV in which the player controls Alex in a third-person perspective. He is allowed to traverse Manhattan Island, which features prominent landmarks such as Central Park and Times Square. Instead of stealing automobiles and mugging older adults, Alex prefers to pursue the Spider-Man approach. He can quickly ascend to the roof by racing against a wall. He may then travel the city from above, avoiding rush hour, thanks to his magical jump abilities and invulnerability to falling damage. Of course, monsters like hunters and the military can reach him even from up there. Alex has numerous powers at his disposal to defend himself. He can lift and fling big objects at foes, making it simple to take down even a full-fledged aircraft. He also possesses the previously noted ability to form shift into anyone he can capture and consume. When done without being spotted, it takes the heat off Alex and, like hiding, eventually puts his human pursuers to sleep. The monsters, on the other hand, will continue to attack him. It also allows him to enter previously inaccessible locations. Different abilities include claws, a shield, boulder-like fists for a big blow, and a forceful lash. Alex may only use one of those powers at a time and must first unlock them. This is accomplished by converting the evolution points he earns by defeating foes and completing tasks into upgrades.

These upgrades, divided into numerous categories, improve his sprint speed, grant him additional abilities such as said powers, or allow him to make new maneuvers such as gliding in the air instead of falling straight down. Furthermore, some commands, like piloting a tank or boosting his ability to handle standard weapons, can only be learned by ingesting specific people with a sign over their heads. This is also required to restore his health and unravel the Web of Intrigue. The Web of Intrigue fills in the gaps about Alex’s past and what happened to him at Gentek. Some passersby, military personnel, or police officers had more or less direct contact with Alex or the project in which he was involved. If he finds and consumes them, a short cutscene illustrates what he learns from that person. The player can access a detailed map from the menu to keep track of his progress. He can rewatch every movie there and see what material relates to others, providing the player with a better knowledge of how each piece of the puzzle fits together.

If the player is not completing the primary plot goals or destroying military bases or hives, he can locate a variety of mini-games in the city. Ranging from kill/consume missions and rooftop races to waging minor skirmishes on either the military or the infected side. The player earns more evolution points in either scenario based on his performance. These mini-games are unlocked by going through the tale and earning a gold medal in a mini-game. The search for landmarks and hints concealed around the island is another activity that awards evolution points. The more of these the player gathers, the more evolution points he earns.
