Quake 4 is the sequel to Quake II, picking up the Strogg vs. Humans scenario where Quake II left off. The Strogg are an alien cyborg race that, like the Star Trek Borg race that they appear to be influenced by, roam the galaxy conquering planets and wiping out civilizations. Their main goal is to gather organic body parts to add to their ranks. After a protracted conflict, Earth’s united military forces resolved to launch a desperate counterattack on the invaders’ home planet, Stroggos. By some strange coincidence, a single marine could turn off the Strogg’s central planetary defense (called The Big Gun) and kill Makron, their leader. Quake II came to an end at that point. The second wave of attack is intended to land on Stroggos and take advantage of the temporary chaos, effectively ending the threat of the Strogg. Of course, it won’t be that simple…

The lone soldier concept (of Quake I, II, and the Doom series) is replaced by a war this time. Not on the same magnitude as a military FPS or even Halo, but near. There are squad mates to guard, vehicles to drive (a hover tank and a mech), and constantly shifting goals to attain. The weaponry includes features from every Quake game (nail gun, rail gun, lightning gun), and the original BFG has been replaced by the Dark Matter Gun. Weapons can be upgraded later in the game to become much more effective. The game uses a slightly upgraded version of the Doom 3 engine. The multiplayer possibilities are pretty restricted, with only Deathmatch and CTF types available.

Raven created Quake 4 with the assistance of id Software.
