Rock Band, developed by the same people who created the Guitar Hero games, takes the concept further. Instead of just playing along with songs on the guitar, this game allows players to form an entire virtual band with up to four musicians, with various sequences for each of the three supported peripherals: guitar (electric and bass), drum, and microphone. The game revolves around striking scrolling notes on the screen in time (scrolling vertically for drum and guitar) and getting the appropriate pitch for the vocals (scrolling horizontally at the top of the screen, along with the lyrics).

The game includes a Solo Tour Mode for a single player and a Band World Tour (along with Quick Play) for two to four players. Players earn money by performing successfully to customize their avatars in the Rock Shop with tattoos, face paint, clothing, and logos. Customized characters are automatically assigned to a specific instrument. Other personalization options include stage movements, tools, and the overall physique and appearance of the game. To win, players must achieve a predetermined score through their combined efforts. Individual agents have multipliers for playing perfectly, and different difficulty levels can exist. Overdrive, a meter filled by not making any mistakes in certain areas of a song, has replaced the Guitar Hero series’ Star Power. When playing in a band, employing Overdrive boosts the band’s scoring multiplier.

Players who fail during a song are shut out, and the audio mix takes over. Other band members can use their Overdrive to renew the player. Failed players, on the other hand, will lower the band’s overall performance. Hence it is critical to bring back band members. In addition to Overdrive parts, there are Union Phrases (score bonus and extra Overdrive) and occasionally Big Rock Endings at the end of a song where another bonus can be obtained.

Players in the Tour Mode visit 41 locations in seventeen different cities. Following the initial venues, others require a certain amount of fans to be opened, and other continents are only accessible when tour buses or private jets are purchased. Not every location has a predefined playlist of songs. They comprise single pieces, numerous songs, bespoke setlists, and mystery setlists. Poor performance can cause the band to lose fans. Extra competition is included to attract managers, roadies, and record label deals.

In addition to the primary modes, each instrument has a vs. mode (Tug of War), a Score Duel (gain the highest points), and a Tutorial mode. Multiplayer games and new songs are downloadable for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions.

The European version is not available as a single unit. Instead, an instrument package is included, and the game is offered separately at a far greater price than the original US edition.
