Following Saints Row: The Third, the Saints gang expanded their reach, and the protagonist was elected President of the United States. Unfortunately, disaster strikes during a news conference: aliens attack the White House, grab the Saints, and confine each in their own indefinitely looping nightmare. Fortunately, Kinzie, the group’s hacker, saves the protagonist, and the two leave inside a spaceship to rescue the rest of the gang. Most of the game was spent in an open-world recreation of Steelport, which served as the setting for Saints Row: The Third. There is complete character creation, allowing you to fine-tune every aspect of the protagonist’s appearance and a choice of seven voices (three male, three female, and Nolan North).

Saints Row IV follows in the footsteps of its predecessor in terms of over-the-top action and hilarity. The gimmick in this game is that the protagonist has superpowers within the simulation, such as super leap, fast sprinting, or telekinesis, which aids in moving quickly and murdering aliens that replace officers as law enforcement. Those abilities make driving almost redundant, yet the player can still kidnap and use cars. Third-person combat with melee and ranged weaponry remains significant.

Like all Saints Row games, it includes various side activities that may be activated at multiple points throughout the game area. The game then shifts to the mini-game, and upon completion, the player is awarded a bronze, silver, or gold medal based on their performance. While some of the activities are familiar from previous installments, such as fraud or tank mayhem, the majority are brand new and revolve around superpowers. For example, one race asks the player to complete a jogging course as quickly as possible, while another demands the player to jump exactly on platforms. While mini-games were an essential element of the main mission line in previous Saints Row titles, they are only required for the team members’ side objectives this time. The main plot includes a variety of tasks that generally involve traveling to a point and murdering everything in sight, but also several sequences that spoof other genres, such as side-scrolling brawlers or top-down shooters. Other activities include collecting audio diaries and destroying the aliens’ infrastructure points.

While the team members are confined to the principal alien spacecraft, they must be liberated from their nightmares in the simulation. To save them, the protagonist enters the ship a few times during the main plotline without abilities – occasionally using a mech instead. Otherwise, the actual world plays a minor role: the simulation can be exited to allow the user to walk around the ship and interact with the team members. Other than initiating missions, the only goal is to mock the Mass Effect series and its romances.

Experience points (used to unlock personal upgrades like better damage resistance or more damage with certain weapons) and cache (used to purchase weapons, ammo, and weapon upgrades) are rewarded for all actions in the game, but completing missions and activities is the most profitable. New superpowers are acquired automatically as the story progresses, but they also have upgrades such as sliding through the air after a super jump or more damage for blasts. These enhancements necessitate the collection of another currency: little luminous balls scattered across the city. Some powers can also change their effects; for example, the blast can be turned to fire or ice. The mobile phone is used to request unlocked cars and unlocked homie assistants (the main crew gains superpowers by completing side quests), to look at a map, or to play licensed music in the background.

Multiplayer consists of playing co-op during the campaign (the second player essentially replaces the buddy) or beginning one of two competitive activities.
