Soulcalibur IV continues the perpetually recounted story of souls and swords, telling the story of the swords Soul Edge and Soul Calibur and those who desire to possess or destroy them. The blades are on a collision course with an ancient king, and only the player can prevent him from unleashing his ambiguous evil on the world.

With a few tweaks, Soulcalibur IV maintains the series’ 3D blade-fighting gameplay. The first game’s ability to breach your opponent’s defenses returns in destructible armor. Armour will weaken in these locations as the player defends against attacks corresponding to the game’s high, middle, and low attacks until the armor ultimately shatters. A Soul Gauge, which gauges how much a player has defended from green to red, is also new—pushing the gauge beyond red causes a Soul Crush, which allows the opponent to perform a character-specific one-shot kill known as a Critical Finish.

Most of the regular cast returns for this battle, along with numerous new characters; the most well-known are Yoda on the Xbox 360, Darth Vader on the PlayStation 3, and Darth Vader’s Apprentice on both systems. All three characters have force powers activated by an additional force meter, limiting how frequently they can be used. Excessive use will instead start depleting the character’s life. Hilde, an armored woman protecting her homeland against the armies of the Soul Edge with a long pole arm and shortsword, is also new. Algol, the last boss, is also playable, wielding the Soul Edge in one hand and the Soul Calibur in the other and wreaking havoc with his teleporting chair. In addition, five “bonus” characters are featured, each individually made by a Japanese artist, who reuses the movie lists from the a-list characters.

The standard Story, Arcade, Training, and Versus modes remain, but Soulcalibur III’s Chronicles of the Sword has been replaced by a new endurance-style campaign dubbed Tower of Lost Souls. Ascend and Descend the tower by fighting waves of foes and obtaining new things along the way by meeting specific conditions such as no ring outs or receiving no damage. The vs. mode is available in regular and special versions, with the former requiring only standard characters and the latter permitting the usage of customized skill sets and equipment usage. Online modes, which allow you to play with other players over the Internet, are new to the series. In the same regular and special modes as versus, both ranked, and unranked matchups are accessible.

New characters and things are unlocked by spending Gold earned in online or single-player modes, while some can only be opened by defeating them in single-player mode. Gold can also be used to unlock artwork in the museum.

The design-a-character functionality from Soulcalibur III returns, allowing you to create your personalized fighter that can be utilized in all game modes. Except for the force users, the final boss Algol, and the five “bonus” characters, the variety of character parts has been substantially enlarged since Soulcalibur III, and it is now possible to personalize the equipment of the stock characters. Unlike in earlier games, the kit now provides benefits or drawbacks to HP, defense, attack, and other skill points. The skill points can be utilized to equip new abilities such as Auto-Counter, Anti-Ring Out, and stat boosting while the Soul Gauge is low.
