The ninth game in the Tales of… series is Tales of Vesperia. The story of the game takes place in the world of Terca Lumireis. This planet is mainly sustained by “blastia,” an ancient civilization’s technology that can be employed to power the barriers that keep cities safe from monsters and assist knights in battle. Following a conflict ten years ago, the globe has settled into a more or less peaceful state ruled by the Empire, and different guilds developed for individuals living outside the Empire’s jurisdiction. The story’s primary character is Yuri Lowell, a former Imperial Knight who now assists people in the lower quarter with their issues. After a blast that regulates water flow in the lower quarter is stolen, Yuri seeks to apprehend the perpetrator but is instead imprisoned. While fleeing, he encounters a mysterious girl named Estelle, looking for Yuri’s boyhood friend Flynn, and their adventure starts.

Tales of Vesperia’s gameplay is comparable to those of other Japanese RPGs and titles in the series. As the game proceeds, the user controls Yuri as he explores various areas. On the screen, opponents (human and monster!) can frequently be spotted, and making contact will initiate a battle. The battle system is an upgraded version found in Tales of the Abyss. Fights occur in real-time, and the player can roam around the miniature battlefield. The player can run/walk, jump, guard, conduct several basic attacks, employ rates (more powerful magic attacks, but these are restricted by the player’s number of technical points), and set the strategy computer-controlled party members will use. Combo attacks are also available in which a sequence of regular and arte attacks are strung together to cause extra damage to the enemy and avoid a counterattack. Players can level up after successfully finishing a battle. New talents are taught when players level up; attack abilities grow, hit points rise, etc.
